AUTO INSURANCE: Auto Insurance and Sexism -- Are Auto Insurance Companies Sexist?

Auto Insurance -- A Sexist Affair
Cars are, for better or for worse, a necessary evil of millions' of people's lives. Certainly in industrialized countries, where cars are seen by many, or even most people, as a necessity, but also, with the coming advent of the new super-cheap car, soon in other parts of the world also perhaps, cars will be everywhere you look.
Cars normally mean auto insurance. Auto insurance is compulsory in many places, in part to protect the driver of the car from him- or herself, but also to protect others from getting in a car crash with someone only to find that they have no auto insurance...
Auto insurance, like all insurance, is based on risk assessment. If you have a poor record driving cars, then auto insurance companies are likely to charge you higher auto insurance premiums. But what about "profiling"? This is when an insurance company assesses your risk based on your membership in a larger group, When it comes to auto insurance and the risk of you having a car crash, it is (a) age and (b) gender that gets looked by many auto insurance companies.
AUTO INSURANCE: When Your Teen Starts to Drive -- You Need Auto Insurance!
Auto Insurance, Rights, and Auto Safety
Auto insurance companies may be pushing the envelope of civil rights, but in many places insurance companies will charge your more for your auto insurance if you are young. This is partly because you have less experience in general, but specifically because you have less experience driving a car.
Auto insurance companies however can also profile you by gender. This applies most often to young people, but males often have to pay higher insurance premiums than females do for their auto insurance.
Auto insurance companies love statistics and one statistic that these insurance companies fixate on is the fact that young males have more car accidents than young females. If you are in a car with a young women behind the wheel then you are safer than if you were passenger to a male driving the car.
Auto insurance companies consider it fair and reasonable to discriminate this way, and charge, for auto insurance, insurance premiums that are sometimes many times the insurance costs a female must pay an auto insurance company for her auto insurance.
Is this fair? Is this a form of "gender profiling"? Even if it is, is it justified by the increased safety level, on average, you are exposed to when you are in your car?
Auto Insurance -- Final Thoughts
Auto insurance, and maybe insurance and insurance companies in general, and certainly cars, are topics we all seem to have something to say about. I would love to generate a lively debate here about this issue of being discriminated against based on gender by auto insurance companies.
So I welcome one and all to generate some heated discussion, here below, in the Comments section of this Hub on auto insurance.

Thank for the content.
It's called men are more likely to get into accidents based on years of solid statistics so of course the insurance company is going to charge you more. Do you people understand the word risk?
In fact recent studies show that women are more likely to get into an accident. As a male I "statistically" have a greator chance of getting into a deadly accident. I believe every example of profilling is wrong when it comes to insurance with the exception of age. Every 16 year old should start off with the same base rate and it's then up to the insurance company to proove a good reason why they should increase my premiums.
thanks for sharing keep sharing
There are many reasons why you should have automobile insurance. There are also many factors that will determine auto insurance quotes like age, vehicle, driver history, and more. You should consider all of these factors when you are looking for the right quote.
this info is great, getting an auto insurance is very important this days.
I agree with what Kris said. Not only is the sexism of auto rates insane (I got quotes from 3 different sites, and in most cases it was $20-$40 more each month in payment) but also age discrimination. An 18 year old male is charged more than a 60 year old male. Even though there are studies proving that at that age there's a greater risk of accidents. I don't understand why there's no government bill to end the discrimination of auto insurance.
Statistics be damned, sexism is sexism. If you're going to charge someone you should base it off their driving record NOT their gender. I'm sorry but I've only gotten 1 ticket... ever... and it was for going 5 miles an hour over the speed limit when I was 17. I got it removed and a female friend who has several tickets and two wrecked cars STILL has cheaper insurance? Are you fucking kidding me?
This is no more acceptable than racism. It's blatant punishment to people that have done nothing wrong and is incredibly offensive and idiotic as even AFTER tickets and accidents are reported (as in my example above, I'm sure others may have the same experience) the male STILL tends to have substantially higher rates.
If they must, make us pay some sort of security deposite for a few years and if we live up to their sexist expectations keep the shit, if we don't give it back. Not a perfect solution but better than paying nearly double someone with the same skill and accidents rates for no bloody reason other than having a dick.

Yes gender profiling is one of the important factors in determining auto insurance rates and even the quickest study would verify why. A couple others that make you question the process are marriage status and if you are a student your academic standing. Clearly these are just the tip of the ice berg with things like who are your neighbors also being thrown into the mix.
